New Jersey Society of the Sons of the American Revolution

The New Jersey Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NJSSAR) will present a $2,500 check to the Princeton Battlefield Society (www.pbs1777.org) at a wreath laying ceremony at the Mercer Oak, Princeton Battlefield State Park, on January 3 at Noon.  The wreath laying commemorates the January 3, 1777 Battle of Princeton and will kick off the PBS’  50th anniversary as a national historic organization.  The check represents the NJSSAR’s commitment to the PBS’ History & Heritage Fund.  It will be presented by Robert C. Meyer, NJSSAR president, and accepted by Michael Russell, a PBS trustee and SAR member.

Princeton’s new mayor, Mark Freda, will be present along with State Assemblymen Roy Freiman and Andrew Zwicker and Andrew Koontz, Chair of the Mercer County Commissioners.

The wreath laying will follow New Jersey’s COVID Guidelines, with only a few Color Guard members in attendance.  As a national SAR event over 35 Color Guard representatives from more than 20 states will be included via zoom.  “Virtual wreaths” will be presented by SAR members from across the United States, including California, Virginia, Texas, Washington, Ohio and Kansas as well as by National SAR leadership.

The NJSSAR donation will be used for the new Battle of Princeton exhibit in the historic Thomas Clarke House being funded by the PBS’ History & Heritage Fund.  The NJSSAR will also have a plaque placed on the mortuary cannon at the historic Thomas Clarke House which commemorates the death of General Hugh Mercer.

The ceremony will be available for all to watch by Zoom.  The event is free but registration is required.  Please click here to register.
